Buying a cargo bike is an investment that lasts for years. Before you choose, it helps to know which types of cargo bikes exist and who they suit. On this page we explain the main differences. Want to go straight to specific models and prices? Check out our Urban Arrow electric cargo bikes.
Electric cargo bike or regular cargo bike?
An electric cargo bike has a mid-drive motor that helps you pedal. With a load of kids or shopping up front, that makes a huge difference — especially if you live in a hilly or windy area, or ride longer distances. Most new cargo bikes sold today are electric, with a Bosch mid-drive motor.
A regular (non-electric) cargo bike is lighter, cheaper and has no battery to charge. Suitable for short rides on flat terrain with a light load. If you only shop now and then, this may be enough, but for daily family use most people today choose an electric version.
In our shop we only sell new electric cargo bikes from Urban Arrow.
Box cargo bike (front) or longtail (rear)?
There are two main types:
A box cargo bike has a large box in front of the handlebars. Your kids or load sit in front of you, in view. Ideal for two children, the school run, shopping or work equipment. The Urban Arrow Family and FamilyNext are classic box cargo bikes.
A longtail is an extended bike where kids or cargo sit at the back on an extra-long rear rack. More nimble than a box cargo bike, easier to manoeuvre in narrow streets, shorter length. Suitable for one or two children on the back. The Urban Arrow Breeze is a longtail.
Two-wheeler or three-wheeler?
Most modern cargo bikes are two-wheelers: faster, lighter, easier on narrow paths. They take a bit more balance, but most people ride them just like a regular bike.
Three-wheelers are more stable when standing still — handy if you often ride with very heavy loads or are unsure about your balance. Downside: heavier, less nimble, and you really have to steer actively in corners. We don't sell three-wheelers; for most families a two-wheeler is more than enough.
Which cargo bike suits whom?
For families with young children: a box cargo bike with a two-seat bench and belts. The kids see you and you see them — safer and more fun. Two children up to about 8 years fit comfortably.
For city dwellers with little storage space: a longtail or a shorter cargo bike. Fits in a narrow hallway or bike shed, easier to park.
For business owners and delivery riders: a box cargo bike with a large cargo space and a powerful motor (85Nm or more). Anyone carrying heavy loads or making many trips a day benefits from a strong motor.
For anyone facing lots of hills or headwind: an electric cargo bike with a strong mid-drive motor and optionally a larger battery.
What should you look for when buying a cargo bike?
Motor and battery. The mid-drive motor does the work. At Urban Arrow these are Bosch motors in various power classes, with a 400Wh battery as standard and upgrades to 545Wh or 800Wh available.
Gears. Enviolo manual is stepless manual shifting — durable and low-maintenance. Enviolo AutomatiQ shifts automatically based on your pedalling speed.
Frame and box. A good cargo bike lasts 10–15 years. Look for a solid EPP cargo box (Family Classic) or the newer FamilyNext box with suspension fork for extra riding comfort.
Belts and safety. For children: 3-point belts for each seat and a continuous footwell.
Warranty and service. A new Urban Arrow comes with a factory warranty on the frame and Bosch warranty on the motor and battery. Important: choose a dealer with its own workshop.

Frequently asked questions

For a new electric cargo bike from a reputable brand, expect roughly between €3.700 and €7.000, depending on model, motor and battery. You'll find current special prices on our models page.
How many children fit in a cargo bike?
An Urban Arrow Family or FamilyNext comfortably fits two children up to about 8 years. There are also versions with an extra spot for a baby in a Maxi-Cosi.
How long does a cargo bike last?
With normal use and regular maintenance, an Urban Arrow lasts 10 to 15 years. The battery lasts 500–800 charge cycles and is replaceable.
Is a cargo bike safe for children?
Yes, provided it has belts and is properly maintained. On delivery we always explain how to ride safely with kids up front.
Can I ride an electric cargo bike on the cycle path?
Yes. An electric cargo bike with assistance up to 25 km/h falls under the same rules as a regular bike and may use the cycle path. A helmet is not mandatory in the Netherlands, but it is recommended for children.
